Boarding schools used to be the norm for missionary kids. Now there are other options that global workers can consider, and boarding school is a possibility depending on where the parents are serving. John Lohrenz joins us to share some of the joys and challenges of attending a boarding school, how his parents decided to send him there and how his experience shaped him into the man he is today.

John and his wife, Jan, have spent 45 years in Central America and Spain, serving in ministries including evangelism, church planting, discipleship, lay church leadership training, Bible translation, building projects and missionary kids’ education. John, a son of missionaries, was born in and raised in West Africa. He became a believer in Jesus Christ at an early age and felt a desire to share the gospel in a foreign context.

John attended a missionary boarding school in West Africa through high school and returned to the U.S. for college, where he studied engineering. After graduating from college, John worked in Africa and Central America as he searched for the place God would have him spend his life. After several years of service, he returned to the U.S. to find a wife and also to complete more training to return to Latin America. After working in a local church, getting more training and starting a family, he and Jan joined a missionary society and started a lifelong adventure on the mission field.

They are currently serving part time in Honduras, providing retreats for local pastors and their wives. John and Jan have three sons, who all grew up in Central America and are now living and working in the U.S.
