Coastal Community Cafe

On a Southeast Asian island is an Islamic people group without a single indigenous gathering of believers. But through a new business that invests in the local community, a team of Christar workers is seeking to change that.

Though cross-cultural workers like members of this team can be open about their faith in Jesus, they must hold a legitimate, non-religious vocation to secure long-term visas, integrate into society and bring practical, positive changes to the community.

The team desires to make a long-term investment in the local community by creating a vibrant cafe, restaurant and event hosting space that welcomes visiting surfers, tourists and locals. As the business develops, the team hopes to:

• Offer local tourism programs such as snorkeling, fishing and cultural food experiences
• Host events that practically benefit the community such as beach cleanups
• Establish a flourishing micro-community involving locals, such as customers, staff, supply chain personnel and government officials.

As the team lives and works in the community, they’ll seek to build relationships through personal encounters and community events and consistently share the gospel in the context of real relationships. Their ultimate goal is to see people trust in Christ, disciple those who believe and see them gather to worship Jesus together.

God has already provided trusted local partners, and with the help of these brothers and sisters in Christ, the team has been able to obtain a loan to purchase an ideal piece of land close to a popular local beach and the main tourist area.

Funds donated to Coastal Community Cafe will go directly to building and operating the business. Once it reaches cash-flow positive, no additional funds will be needed. Based on the financial projections, an approximate time for this process is two to three years.

By Supporting Financially:

$247,000 is needed to establish the Coastal Community Cafe. This includes:

• $30,000 repays the loan for the land purchase.
• $57,000 provides the infrastructure needs of Phase 1, such as clearing the land, drilling a well and setting up electrical and septic systems, as well as construction of a small building to serve coffee, drinks and snacks.
• $77,000 covers the cost of Phase 2 construction of the two-story main building, allowing the café to expand into hosting breakfast, lunch, dinner and special events.
• $83,000 keeps the business operating for 2½ years.
