Their Well-Being Matters: Praying for Workers as Well as Their Work
In addition to praying for cross-cultural workers’ ministries, it’s vital that we pray for them. They can only serve well in least-reached communities if they are well, and Satan seeks to hinder the spread of the gospel by attacking those who proclaim it.
In Ephesians 6:12 Paul says, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” When we pray for workers’ well-being, we wrestle on their behalf! Here are some specific ways to lift up their mental, emotional, and spiritual health.
-
Pray that workers remember and grow in their understanding of their identity in Christ, that they would stand firm against lies from the enemy. Pray that they would renew their minds daily with Scripture and hear the Spirit prompting them to respond to lies with truth from God’s Word.
-
Pray for community that speaks truth into their lives. Whether this looks like teammates, other expats, local believing friends, or friends from their passport country, pray that God would give them people to walk alongside them. Pray that workers experiencing loneliness or isolation would sit with the Lord and experience peace in His presence.
-
Pray for unity with other believers: teammates, other cross-cultural workers and local believers. Pray against attacks from the Enemy and against comparison, envy, discouragement, gossip and striving. Pray that the truth of the gospel would be evident through the love that believers have for one another.
-
Pray for wisdom from the Spirit to know when to forbear and when to engage in healthy conflict. Ask that workers communicate well and approach hurts and miscommunication with humility.
-
Pray that workers would persevere and continue to faithfully remove rocks and plant gospel seeds. The least-reached are least-reached for a reason: They’re hard to reach! Sometimes workers spend years laboring but see minimal fruit. Ask God for divine appointments and that workers would be sensitive to the Spirit. Pray for discernment in knowing when to continue investing in a relationship and when to step back.
-
Pray for workers to manage stress in healthy ways. Sin struggles are amplified in cross-cultural settings. Pray that workers combat temptation, confess sin, and ask for accountability.
-
Pray that workers would feel comfortable sharing how they are truly doing and asking for support if they need it. Workers have periodic check-ins with leadership and member care advocates. Ask that those responsible for care would discern when care is needed, even when it is not requested.
